Unprepared Caregiving: The Role You Never Prepared For

Caring for someone you love? Receiving care from someone you love? Feeling unprepared? You are not alone—by 2020, approximately 157 million Americans will be living with a chronic illness. In this presentation/workshop, Dr. White draws on academic research and personal experience to help informal caregivers:

  • Make sense of how care impacts you and your relationships
  • Build and maintain an effective social support system
  • Navigate family care complications
  • Communicate your situation to others

Dr. Zachary White is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Queens University of Charlotte.  He received his Ph.D. in communication from Purdue University. After his mother’s terminal cancer diagnosis and before her death, Zachary lived under the influence of dying when he cared for his mother in person.  Totally unprepared for the experience, Zachary’s personal experiences and academic research have since focused on how people manage meaning and communicate their experiences amidst high levels of uncertainty. He has published and presented academic research on the experiences and communication challenges of home hospice nurses, home hospice volunteers, informal caregiving in the workplace, and preemie parents’ uncertainty management in the NICU and during the transition home.  He is the founder of “The Unprepared Caregiver,” a popular blog and resource that addresses what happens when care meets love.
